Everyone has a right to be counted.
The 2020 Census is here and we have kept a close eye on response rates, because we know what is at stake. Political representation, federal funding, and community planning all depend heavily on census data. In fact, North Carolina is projected to gain an additional seat in the House of Representatives this year; a step towards increased representation that an incorrect count could cost us. North Carolina has set aggressive goals to overcome the 2000 and 2010 response rate, which were both below the national average (64.0% and 64.8% respectively). New Hanover County is aiming for 80%, which is considerably higher than the 68.5% the county achieved 10 years ago.
Currently the majority of the census tracts in the Cape Fear region are stalled below 55% response rate. We are working with local organizations to identify and support those areas at risk of being undercounted.
